Water Purification

We often hear that all water is the same, since it can look, smell, and taste alike. That is an accurate statement; water is one and the same, comprised of one oxygen molecule and two hydrogen molecules. But, with increasing pollution, one of the two water properties “Adhesion” (water attracted to other substances) should be a concern on the affects to our health with this essential component of life.

Water is called the most “universal solvent” because it is capable of dissolving more substances than any other liquid. This means wherever water goes through – air, ground, bodies, etc. – it’s like a magnet and can dissolve, attract, and accumulate:

  • Chemicals
  • Heavy metals
  • Inorganic compounds
  • Organic compounds
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Minerals
  • Nutrients

The purer the water, the easier it picks up the dissolved impurities. “Dissolved solids” refers to any minerals, salts, metals, cations, or anions dissolved in water. The water purity is often represented numerically by “total dissolved solids” (TDS), a test which measures the concentration level of soluble impurities in pure H2O. The lower the number, the purer the water.

However, water quality in today’s world is constantly changing for the worse and is different dependent on its location, travels, and source. By understanding the basics of water’s powerful properties, it’s becoming more important to identify the difference between purified water vs. filtered water.

The Difference Between Filtered Water & Purified Water

The main difference between filtered and purified water lies in the level of cleanliness and the types of contaminants each process can remove.

  • Filtered water, while cleaner than tap water, may not remove all chemical pollutants, metals, and microorganisms.
  • Purified water typically undergoes more rigorous treatments, making it safer for consumption by removing a broader spectrum of impurities. Purified water can remove many water imperfections such as viruses, bacteria, algae, fungi, parasites, metals, and chemical pollutants.

The difference is purified water is guaranteed to be the same high quality every time, regardless of variations in the source water’s quality.
